At initial appointment

At the first visit you will meet your audiologist, who will ask about your medical history, hearing loss history and general health to build a comprehensive case history. Please bring along previous audiological tests and or reports, as well as current hearing aids being used.

There are a number of hearing test the audiologist will do that will be used to determine the best treatment/management option for your hearing impairment.  These hearing tests can include:
  • pure tone audiogram with and or without your hearing aid/s
  • speech recognition testing with and or without your hearing aid/s
The results of the hearing tests will be reviewed and discussed after completion of the above tests, to determine the best treatment option for your type and degree of hearing loss.  Information will be given on different treatment options.
Referrals to other professionals to aid in the decision-making process e.g. ENT-specialist, audiologist who fitted hearing aids, speech therapist will be suggested.

Assessment results and information gained at the initial appointment, will be presented at the monthly multi-disciplinary team meeting of the Johannesburg Cochlear Implant Programme (JCIP).  At this meeting the team, consisting of ENT-surgeons, audiologists and rehabilitation therapists, will provide further input regarding the best treatment option for your hearing impairment.  Your audiologist will give you feedback following the case-presentation at the monthly JCIP meeting.
